Social contact has been shown to help people feel more stable and grounded and reduce feelings of depression, isolation and loneliness. Individuals with strong family and social networks have a lower incidence of psychological disturbance and actually live longer. There are many ways to strengthen your social network, but the first step is to make it a priority. Learn to value your family, friends and colleagues. Treat people well and they will return the favor. Give the time to develop relationships and you will be rewarded. If you have significant difficulty with relationships, consider making that a focus of your psychotherapy or self help program. You can join a group or meet people in a situation that helps fulfill one of your other self help goals. Join an exercise group, a yoga class, a continuing education class or a church. Begin developing your group support network right now by posting a message on the Bulletin Board.
